Here, at Altertide® we strive to provide the best customer service possible. That’s why the team of our engineers tried to answer the Web’s most searched questions regarding LiFePO4 batteries and their maintenance.

General information

What is a Deep Cycle Battery?

A deep-cycle battery is battery designed to be regularly deeply discharged using most of its capacity. This term is particularly true for the batteries that utilise the LiFePO4 chemistry. While it is not advised and even damaging to discharge a lead-acid battery to 100% of its capacity, the LiFePO4 batteries are specifically designed to handle this type of operation.

What is Depth of Discharge (DOD)?

Depth of Discharge (DoD) is a term describing the actual amount of energy that can be drawn out of the battery without damaging the device. In the case of drawing maximally 90Ah out of the declared 100Ah of energy – the DoD equals 90%.

What is Lithium Iron Phosphate?

Lithium Iron Phosphate is a chemical compound with great energy storing capacity. Lithium Iron Phosphate formula allows the batteries to be safe (no liquids) lightweight and very durable.

What is a Lithium Iron Phospate battery lifespan

Lifespan is one of the biggest advantages of LiFePO4 batteries. Altertide batteries will last decades with minimal wear. They are rated for 2000 cycles (100% DoD). That means that the battery can be fully charged and discharged 2000 times without any loss of capacity. In practice, with more traditional usage (75-80% DoD) Altertide batteries will last more that 5000 cycles without any loss of capacity. That’s almost 14 years of everyday usage!

What is the best Deep Cycle battery for a solar system?

Lithium Iron Phosphate is a clear winner here. Gel and Lead-Acid batteries might cause problems when stored idlly for a longer period of time. LiFePO4 batteries can be stored indefinitely without causing any risk, so hooking Lithium up to a solar system is the only reasonable way to go

Are the LiFePO4 batteries safe?

Yes! Due to their “dry” design they cannot leak, explode, offgas or cause any risk to their users. This is another great reason why they are perfect for mobile houses, RV’s and campervans. Additionally every Altertide battery is protected by an integrated BMS controller (Battery Management System) .

What type of LFP cells do you use in the batteries?

We use prismatic LiFePO4 andLiFePO4 32650 cylindrical cells in our Altertide batteries.

Maintenance

How to store LiFePO4 batteries?

A huge advantage of the LiFePO4 batteries is their extremely low self-discharge rate. This means that once you charge them, they hold energy for a very long time and when you want to use them again after a winter break you still have a lot power to go with. Before winterizing your batteries we reccomend charging them up to 14.4 volts.

What's the LiFePO4 voltage range?

The voltage range of Altertide batteries is between 10.0V and 14.6V. The integrated BMS will keep the battery from going outside of this range.

What's the LiFePO4 charging current?

The charging current recommended for our Altertide batteries is ~40A. This will charge the battery in only 2.5 hours!

What's the LiFePO4 charge / discharge voltage?

Max. (BMS protected) charge current for the batteries is 50A and max. safe continous discharge current is 100A. The battery is able to take higher charge rates (ex. 100A), but in order to ensure the greatest lifespan of the battery we’ve set the BMS to allow 50A.

How to charge a LiFePO4 battery?

There are different chargers you can use in order to charge Altertide batteries. We recommend using chargers designed for charging LiFePO4 batteries. 14.4V is the recommended bulk charge voltage and 13.6V is the recommended float voltage.

How long will it take to charge a LiFePO4 battery?

It depends on different factors, such as charge current, voltage and the type of the charger. For example – at the recommended voltages, and using a ~40A charger if shouldn’t take more than 3 hours to charge a 100Ah Altertide battery to full state.

How to hook up a battery charger?

Just connect the +cathode to the red bolt and the -anode to the black bolt and allow the charger to do the rest.

Battery systems

Differences between 12V, 24V, 48V systems.

There are a few important things to note when comparing DC battery systems. Higher voltage may be more dangerous if something goes wrong, but also causes less impedance thus allowing for more efficiency. Also there are more 12V appliances on the market, which makes this system more malfunction-proof in many countries of the world.

What type of payments do you accept?

Altertide accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover credit cards. Additionally, we can process orders through Paypal and wire transfer.

What's the order processing time?

Processing time can take between 1-3 business days for U.S. continental orders and 3-5 days for international orders.

What is the delivery cost?

We offer free U.S. ground shipping for all Altertide batteries. The delivery cost of international orders is dependent on the location of our customer.

How do I return my battery?

In an unlikely event when there is a problem with Alteride battery all customers are eligible to return their faulty product. Altertide offers 5 years of manufacturer’s warranty that covers all possible product defects, but does not apply to the misused products.

Customer is responsible for shipping charges at full published rate for both sending and return shipping, (including if customer was given Free or Promotional Shipping rates). This applies even if the customer has refused delivery or was unavailable for delivery.

I've bought a battery through a 3rd party seller, can I return it?

Returns and refunds for purchases made through third-parties (Walmart, Amazon LLC, etc.) must be handled through the vendor’s return policy. Altertide cannot assist in third-party returns and refunds. Altertide can only offer replacements for products still within the warranty period.
